“Greenways”.Hawksdown.Walmer CT14 7PH

“Greenways” is a unique and magnificent house on the much sought after and prestigious private Hawksdown estate in Upper Walmer. Designed in a Mediterranean style, large windows to the ceiling flood the house with natural light and the very low window sills allow an uninterrupted view of the gardens. “Greenways” stands centrally in about an acre of wonderfully landscaped gardens designed and laid out by Sir Percy Cane (1881-1976),who was of one of the countries leading horticulturists and designers.

Built in the 1930’s by local builders Dennes the house consists briefly of 4 reception rooms, 5/6 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, kitchen/breakfast room and two cloakrooms.

Deal is just 2 miles away and is a lovely unspoilt English seaside town with a good selection of High Street shops, bars, restaurants and cafes along with a wonderful conservation area. It also boasts an award winning pier with a recently constructed contemporary café at the head which has also recently received a national architecture award. Dover and Canterbury are nearby and offer comprehensive shopping and numerous tourist attractions.

The estate is within walking distance of a good range of local shops including a newsagents, post office, bakers, butchers, supermarket and a chemist. Just a few hundred meters further on is a main line station with routes to Canterbury and London with the high speed link regularly accessible by the end of 2009.

The Gardens;-

Over the years much has been photographed and written about these outstanding gardens. Originally laid out by Sir Percy Cane and so pleased was he with the design he them on the cover and inside his book “The Creative Art of Garden Design” as well as featuring on the 1969 “Country Life” calendar.

To the West of the house lies the featured area consisting of a wealth of York stone paving and steps surrounding a rectangular sunken garden. Stone benches at either end of the water garden highlight the shape and the symmetrical proportions of the design. Box hedges have been planted with a pea stone base and finished off with contemporary style sculptures.

The surrounding lawns and plant beds area a myriad of mixed shrubs and plants along with some large a mature trees including chestnut, beech, magnolia, flowering cherry and  eucalyptus along the perimeter of the garden which adds to seclusion of the property.

A small orchard area with apple, pear and plum trees is situated in the North East corner. A large 20’ x 10’ shed has been recently fitted in this corner which also leads directly to the secluded composting area.

A long pea shingle driveway dissects the gardens and leads up to the parking area for several vehicles and onwards to the garage.
